Smart Lock Installation in Dubai: Mortise vs. Retrofit Guide
Choosing a smart lock for your Dubai home starts with your existing door. This guide compares mortise and retrofit options, including door modifications, rental suitability, and what to check before installation.
Mortise vs. retrofit: which smart lock fits your door?
A replacement mortise smart lock uses a lock body fitted into the door edge, usually with new interior and exterior fittings. An interior retrofit unit adds smart operation to compatible existing hardware.
Start with compatibility: Consider a mortise replacement when you want a new handle and access system and the door can accept it. Consider an interior retrofit when retaining existing hardware matters. Neither option is suitable for every door.
The terms can overlap. “Mortise” describes the mechanical lock format; “retrofit” describes an upgrade approach. Some interior retrofit devices operate a cylinder connected to an existing mortise lock. This guide compares full mortise replacement with interior motor retrofits.
What is a mortise smart lock?
A mortise lock has a mechanical lock case recessed into a pocket in the door edge. Smart replacement models add electronic access through compatible handles, readers or keypads.
When it can suit your entrance
When you want new interior and exterior fittings, integrated access controls and a lock body matched to the door. Suitability depends on measurements and construction, rather than whether the property is a villa or apartment.
When modifications are needed
Existing cut-outs may be reusable if they match the selected hardware. Different case dimensions, fixing positions or strike plates can require additional drilling, routing or frame work.
Fingerprint access is a feature of the selected model, rather than a guarantee of the mortise format. The ZEKI X1 fingerprint smart door lock, for example, offers fingerprint, PIN, RFID and TTLock access with a mechanical key backup. Confirm the supplied lock body and fitting dimensions before choosing it.
A larger lock is not automatically more secure. Assess the actual hardware, installation quality, cylinder, door and frame. Avoid assuming that every mortise model provides multipoint locking or the same resistance to forced entry.
What is an interior retrofit smart lock?
An interior retrofit unit adds motorized operation to a compatible existing lock, often by turning an inside key, thumb-turn or supported cylinder adapter.
This approach can retain the exterior handle and keyhole. However, cylinder replacement, mounting adapters or other fitting changes may still be necessary. Check the exact product and door combination before treating the installation as drill-free or fully reversible.
Useful when exterior changes are restricted
An interior unit may be worth considering for a rental or an entrance whose exterior appearance must be retained. Obtain any required landlord or building approval before installation.
Check the existing mechanism first
The cylinder, lock and door must already operate smoothly. A smart motor does not correct a binding bolt, a misaligned frame or an incompatible handle mechanism.
Retrofit example: ZEKI BOT DLB2
The ZEKI BOT DLB2 retrofit smart lock supports TTLock and Bluetooth operation. Its available keypad options and gateway requirements should be checked with the selected package.
- Keypad access: Fingerprint, PIN and card entry depend on the optional compatible keypad configuration.
- Remote access: Internet-based unlocking may require a compatible Wi-Fi gateway. Bluetooth access alone is local.
- Mechanical backup: Confirm outside-key operation with the actual cylinder and fitted unit; do not assume it remains unchanged.
Mortise replacement vs. interior retrofit
Use these differences to shortlist an approach, then confirm the exact model against your door.
| Factor | Mortise replacement | Interior retrofit |
|---|---|---|
| Existing hardware | Usually replaces the lock case and interior/exterior fittings. | Retains compatible existing components; a cylinder change may be needed. |
| Door modifications | Depend on how closely the new hardware matches existing preparation. | May be minimal, but mounting and cylinder requirements must be checked. |
| Exterior appearance | Usually changes the exterior handle or access panel. | Often retains the exterior handle; an optional keypad adds an outside device. |
| Rental considerations | Obtain approval for replacement hardware and any door changes. | May be easier to remove, subject to mounting method and approvals. |
| Fingerprint or PIN | Available on suitably equipped models. | May require a separate compatible keypad or reader. |
| Remote unlocking | Depends on supported connectivity and accessories. | Depends on supported connectivity and accessories. |
| Physical security | Depends on the replacement hardware, door, frame and fitting. | Continues to depend substantially on the retained mechanical hardware. |
Door checks that matter before installation
- Door material and thickness: Measure the actual door and compare it with the selected model’s specifications. There is no single thickness range that fits every UAE entrance.
- Lock body and backset: For replacement hardware, compare the case, faceplate, spindle position and fixing holes. Backset is the distance from the door edge to the relevant lock or spindle centerline.
- Cylinder and outside-key operation: Check cylinder type and adapter compatibility. Where a key remains inside, confirm the manufacturer’s requirements for operating a key from outside.
- Handle action and available space: Identify lift-to-lock or multipoint mechanisms. Confirm that the interior unit clears the handle, frame and nearby fittings.
- Door and strike alignment: The door should close and lock without pushing, pulling or forcing the key. Resolve mechanical resistance before adding motorized operation.
- Approvals and door certification: Confirm landlord and building requirements. For a fire-rated entrance, verify that the proposed hardware and installation method are suitable for that door assembly.
- Exposure and access needs: Check the model’s environmental limits, battery arrangements, backup entry and supported user-access features.
Photos are an initial check. Send front, interior and door-edge views, plus measurements where available. Final compatibility may require an on-site assessment. Avoid including your unit number or personal details in the photos.

Mortise and retrofit smart lock FAQs
Can a retrofit smart lock work with a mortise lock?
Some interior retrofit units can operate a compatible cylinder connected to an existing mortise mechanism. Compatibility depends on the cylinder, adapter, operating force, handle action and available mounting space. “Mortise” does not automatically rule out a retrofit.
Does every mortise smart lock require new cutting?
No. A suitable replacement may reuse existing preparation. Additional work depends on differences in the lock case, faceplate, fixing holes and strike alignment. Check dimensions before ordering.
Can I fit a smart lock on a rented apartment door?
Check your tenancy conditions and any landlord or building approval requirements first. An interior retrofit may reduce changes, but it does not automatically satisfy those requirements or preserve a door’s certification.
Will my existing outside key still work?
It depends on the cylinder and retrofit design. Some arrangements need a cylinder with an emergency or double-clutch function when an inside key remains inserted. Follow the selected product’s instructions and test backup entry with the door open.
Do retrofit locks include fingerprint and remote unlocking?
Not necessarily. Fingerprint access may need an optional reader or keypad, while internet-based access may need a compatible gateway. Confirm the exact package rather than assuming every advertised feature is included.
How long will installation take?
The time depends on hardware compatibility, door preparation, alignment and setup. Ask for an estimate after sharing your door photos and lock model. A straightforward compatible fitting and a replacement requiring door modifications involve different amounts of work.
Not sure which smart lock fits your door?
